Early years (0 to 5 year olds)

In York we wish to maintain a strong culture of continuous professional development across the early year’s workforce who include day nurseries, pre-schools, childminders, OOSC and the maintained sector.

A career in early years provides and opportunity to make a real difference.  Early years are a vitally important sector which needs high quality, qualified practitioners across a range of levels.  It’s about being an inspiration to other and playing a crucial role in shaping the lives of future generations.

Early Years Teacher Status (formally known as EYPS)

Early Years Teachers make the education and care of babies and children their first concern.  They are accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in their professional practice and conduct.  Early years Teacher Status is awarded to graduates who are leading education and care and who have been judged to have met all of the standards in practice from birth to the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Graduate Leader Fund

Developing high quality early years leaders is central to workforce development and improving outcomes for children and young people.

More Great Childcare, published in January 2013, sets out a plan of action for how the government will achieve its vision of a dynamic childcare market, delivering high quality early education.  The report includes the government’s response to Professor Cathy Nutbrown’s independent review Foundations for quality.
